Wichita Falls
Wichita Falls, Texas
Wichita Falls takes its name from a series of small waterfalls along the Wichita River. The original falls no longer exist, but the city has built a scenic replica in town. The name of the falls and the river itself are taken from the Wichita tribe of Native Americans.
Wichita Falls is a growing city of North Texas, the largest city north of DFW and south of Oklahoma. It is home to Sheppard Air Force Base and Midwestern State University.
The athletic teams of Midwestern State offer opportunities for sports fans to enjoy a game or two during visits.
Lake Arrowhead State Park is 14 miles south of town, while Lake Wichita is on the southern edge of the city. Both offer fine fishing and boating opportunities. Lake Arrowhead has a population of prairie dogs that is popular with visitors.
The Railroad Museum is one of the best museums in Wichita Falls, a city that sprang into its own when the railroad first arrived in 1882. There are a half-dozen or so public golf courses and close to 40 city parks around town.
