Texas Sports Teams

Professional Teams: Major Leagues

Texans love their sports teams, whether it be the Dallas Cowboys, the Texas Longhorns or a small-town, minor-league baseball team.

If you enjoy attending sports events, then no matter what time of year you plan to visit, you are likely to find opportunities.

Below we run down most of the major sports teams in the state, both professional and college. When you see a team name linked, that link (which will open in a new window) will take you to the team Web site where you can get information on schedules and tickets.

Football is king in Texas, and when it comes to football, the Dallas Cowboys wear the crown.

The Cowboys, long called "America's Team," (a monicker they originally gave to themselves, but which was then picked up in the national media), play in Texas Stadium. Texas Stadium is in Irving, which is midway between Fort Worth and Dallas, part of the DFW Metroplex.

Texas' other National Football League (NFL) team, the Houston Texans, entered the NFL in the years following the departure of the Oilers, Houston's original NFL team, for Tennessee.

The Texans play in Reliant Stadium, one of the younger stadiums in the NFL.

In Major League Baseball, Texas again has two teams, the Texas Rangers and the Houston Astros.

The Astros spent their entire existance in the Astrodome until moving to Minute Maid Park in Downtown Houston for the 2002 season. Minute Maid Park was originally called Enron Field, but, well, you know what happened to Enron.

The Ballpark in Arlington is home to the Rangers, formerly partly owned by President George W. Bush.

Arlington is another city within the DFW Metroplex, and, like Irving, is situated between Dallas and Fort Worth.

The MLB regular season runs from April through October.

Texas has three teams in the National Basketball Association (NBA), the Houston Rockets, Dallas Mavericks and San Antonio's only major-league sports team, the Spurs.

The Spurs, two-time NBA champions, play in the SBC Center on the east side of town, just outside Downtown.

The Dallas Mavericks call American Airlines Center home, while the Houston Rockets are housed in the Toyota Center. The Toyota Center's first season of action is the 2003-04 NBA season, and the center is located in Downtown Houston.

American Airlines Center is located just north of Dallas' Central Business District.

The NBA season runs from October through April.

The Dallas Stars also play in the American Airlines Center, and are the only major-league hockey team in Texas. The National Hockey League (NHL) season runs from October through April.
