About the Texas Maritime Museum:
The official state maritime museum, the Texas Maritime Museum explores Texas maritime history through four main themes: offshore oil and gas exploration; history and development of Texas maritime communities; exploration and settlement of the Texas Gulf Coast; and overview of the Texas seafood/fishing industry.
There are more than 2,000 artifacts on display at the museum, which is also one of seven museums in six coastal counties that are charged with telling the story of the doomed LaSalle expedition.
Robert Cavelier, Sieur de LaSalle, sailed from France in 1684 to find the mouth of the Mississippi River. LaSalle missed his target by 400 miles. His ship, La Belle, wrecked in Matagorda Bay and was excavated in the 1990s. (Most members of the ill-fated expedition died, and LaSalle was killed by his own men.) Artifacts from the La Belle are part of the museum's collection.
The Texas Maritime Museum is open Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m.- 4 p.m., and Sunday 1-4 p.m. The museum is closed on Mondays, plus Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years days. A modest admission fee is charged.
