Temple

Temple, Texas
Temple is a city of approximately 55,000 residents in the Killeen-Belton-Temple nexus along Interstate 35 in Central Texas. Temple is roughly the midway point along I-35 between San Antonio to the south and Dallas-Fort Worth to the north.

The Temple economy has a strong medical component, with numerous highly regarded hospitals, clinics and teaching facilities, including the Texas A&M University School of Medicine. The Medicine & Science Discovery Center of Central Texas, located in the Santa Fe Depot downtown, offers visitors hands-on experience with science and medicine.

Since 1989, Temple has held the title of "Wildflower Capital of Texas." Self-guided tours and community events are held in March and April to celebrate that distinction.

Among the museums of note in Temple are the Czech Heritage Museum, Grove Country Life Museum and Railroad and Heritage Museum. Temple is also home to the Texas Early Day Tractor and Engine Association, which hosts the largest largest tractor and engine show in Texas every October.

Temple College's athletics programs offer viewing opportunities for sports fans. The city's Sammon Park Golf Course is popular. Nearby lakes Belton and Stillhouse Hollow provide fishing and boating fun. The Miller Springs Natural Area is a canyon near the Lake Belton spillway, with a wetlands area below.

Getting to Temple

Temple is north of Austin via Interstate 35/Highway 190, just beyond Belton and just east of Killeen. Continuing north up I-35 from Temple takes the driver to Waco.

The City of Temple operates the Draughon-Miller Central Texas Regional Airport, which has undergone many expansions and improvements in recent years. However, this airport is not yet served by commercial passenger airlines. The Killeen-Fort Hood Regional Airport is the closest airport with passenger service, offering American Eagle and Continental Express flights. The Austin and Waco airports are also options.
