About the Spindletop-Gladys City Boomtown Museum:
Spindletop is the hilltop location of the Lucas Gusher in 1901 that launched the oil boom in Southeast Texas. Gladys City is the name of the boomtown that sprung up around Spindletop. The Spindletop-Gladys City Boomtown Museum celebrates the history of both.
The museum opened in 1976 and has seen more than a half-million visitors since that time. At Gladys City, maps, news articles and photos relate the history of the Spindletop oil field. The Spindletop derrick is still there (although parts of the equipment have been transferred to the Texas Energy Museum), and the boomtown includes a post office, saloon and barber shop in addition to the oil-related buildings.
The Spindletop-Gladys City Boomtown Museum is open Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and on Sundays 1-5 p.m. There is a small admission fee.
