Rockport

Rockport, Texas - a k a Rockport-Fulton
Rockport, in Aransas County, is a city of sand and surf, fishing and birding, on a peninsula of land along the Coastal Bend. The Aransas and Redfish bays are on the Gulf side of Rockport, and Copano Bay is on the opposite side. The much smaller bayside community of Fulton is adjacent to Rockport, and together the area is often referred to as Rockport-Fulton.

Rockport has gained a reputation as an artists' colony, too. The Rockport Center for the Arts displays rotating art shows, including many from local artists, and there are numerous galleries in town that make for great shopping and viewing.

The entire area is a birdwatcher's paradise, with hundreds of species viewable throughout the year. The smallest are the hummingbirds, which are celebrated in yearly festival. The most majestic are the highly endangered whooping cranes, which spend their winters at nearby Aransas National Wildlife Refuge. There are also multiple places in town for birdwatching, such as the Bird Garden and Wetlands Pond and the Connie Hagar Cottage Sanctuary.

Fishing spots and fishing guides are plentiful in the area, with excursions onto the bays the most popular choice. The 2-mile-long Copano Causeway Pier is another great option for anglers. Rockport's maritime heritage is celebrated annually at Oysterfest, one of the premier festivals of the Coastal Bend, and at the Texas Maritime Museum.

Fulton Mansion, a 29-room home restored to the glory it showed when it was built in 1870s, is a popular tour stop. Goose Island State Park is just across the Copano Causeway from Rockport, and Rockport Beach Park is the best beach in the immediate area.

Getting to Rockport

Rockport is located north of Corpus Christi along the stretch of the Texas coastline known as the Coastal Bend. It's about a 30-45 minute drive on Texas Highway 35 from Corpus Christi to Rockport, and the Rockport-Fulton area is also very close to the coastal communities of Aransas Pass and Port Aransas.

The Corpus Christi International Airport is the closest airport with commercial passenger service.
