About the Lake Waco Wetlands:
Operated by the City of Waco Water Utility Services, the Lake Waco Wetlands area provides a great place to go birdwatching, walking or wildlife viewing.
The Lake Waco Wetlands cover 180 acres along the North Bosque River. The ecosystem is now thriving, but this wetlands is manmade. It was created to mitigate habitat loss when the level of Lake Waco was raised by seven feet.
Visitors can stop in the 6,000-square-foot Research and Education Center that offers informational materials and observation decks. Trails branch out from the center.
As for the wetlands itself, the Lake Waco Wetlands offers a diverse array of plant and animal life, including marshes and groves of hardwoods; birds (such as the great blue heron and great egret), foxes, deer and green tree frogs.
The Lake Waco Wetlands is open Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-4 p.m., and on alternating Saturdays from 8 a.m.-noon.
