Granbury

Granbury, Texas
Granbury is a charming city about 30 miles outside the buzzing Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, just far enough outside DFW (southwest of Fort Worth, to be precise) that is retains a small-town feel.

And Granbury is a small-town - under 10,000 population - but a growing one. It's a very pretty place with a distinctive town square full of historic buildings, tons of bed-and-breakfast establishments, and a popular lake as the focal point of much of the city.

Lake Granbury is a reservoir formed by impounding the Brazos River. There are parks along its banks, some of which have boat launches. The Granbury City Park is one along the lake's 103-mile shoreline and is the location of the city beach.

Kayaking, water skiing, jetskiing and, of course, fishing are popular activities on the lake.

The Granbury town square includes numerous historic buildings and plenty of shopping and dining opportunities. Nearby Acton State Historic Site is the smallest state park in Texas - it contains the gravesite of Elizabeth Crockett, wife of Davy Crockett.

The Brazos Drive-In Theater is one of just a handful that remain in Texas, and is open March through December. The Railroad Depot Museum and Hood County Museum offer much for history enthusiasts. For family fun in Granbury, try The Gulch at Granbury (miniature golf, driving range, batting cages, etc.) or the Granbury Rose Paddlewheel (a cruise around Lake Granbury on a paddlewheel boat).

Getting to Granbury

Granbury is located approximately 30 miles southwest of Fort Worth, in the Brazos River Valley. US Highway 377 is the road most traveled by folks driving to Granbury. It runs through town on a southwest-to-northeast axis, with Stephenville the next city on the southwest side of Granbury and Benbrook and other communities on the southwest side of Fort Worth the next cities up the road going northeast. The small town of Glen Rose, famous for its dinosaur tracks, is about 15 minutes south via Texas 144.

Granbury does not have an airport that is served by commercial carriers. Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport is about 65 miles from Granbury, and Dallas Love Field is about a 75-mile drive away.
