About Goose Island State Park and Big Tree:
Goose Island State Park is a 321-acre facility that has been part of the Texas state parks systems since the 1930s, when the Civilian Conservation Corps built its earliest structures.
Goose Island State Park is surrounded by Aransas and St. Charles bays, but there is no swimming allowed at the park. A concrete bulkhead makes up the shoreline. What is allowed here is camping, fishing, picnicking and boating. Goose Island State Park is excellent for birdwatching and photography, and there are paved and unpaved areas for walking.
Goose Island State Park is about 10 miles northeast of Rockport, just over the Copano Causeway Bridge, off of Texas Highway 35. The park is open daily yearround with a small admission fee.
"Big Tree" is, well, a big tree! Located just outside the park's entrance, Big Tree was named State Champion Coastal Live Oak (Quercus virginiana) in 1969. It is estimated to be more than 1,000 years old, and its massive crown is believed to make it one of the largest in the U.S.
