Gonzales
Gonzales, Texas
Gonzales is one of Texas' historic small towns, a town that played a major role in the Texas Revolution, and a city that today embraces its past with a large collection of impressively restored historic homes and buildings.
Gonzales was established in 1825 on the Kerr Creek, just more than 2 miles from the confluence of the Guadalupe and San Marcos rivers.
What many believe was the first shot fired in Texas' war of independence from Mexico was fired in Gonzales from the "Come and Take It" cannon, by a brigade under the "Come and Take It" flag.
Gen. Sam Houston used Gonzales as a point to organize and regroup his soldiers, before burning the town and departing for San Jacinto in what is known as "The Runaway Scrape."
Today, history is celebrated in Gonzales. And visitors will find peaceful parks in which to picnic.
