Fredericksburg
Fredericksburg, Texas
Fredericksburg is a small but bustling town in Central Texas with strong German heritage. It makes a great day trip from Austin or San Antonio, or a great getaway stay with its dozens and dozens of bed-and-breakfast establishments.
Fredericksburg is known for its shopping (particularly crafts and antiques), its B&B community, its German-themed restaurants, for the lovely wildflowers that bloom all around it every spring, and for several highly regarded wineries. It's also famous for its peaches, which are grown in orchards all around the area.
Main Street (Highway 290/87) is where the action is in town. Both sides of the street are lined with shops and restaurants, and visitors are sure to spend hours strolling up and down. A word of advice: Because it is the main road through town (it is, as pointed out above, Highways 290 and 87), Main Street becomes highly congested and very loud at rush hour times. Plan your shopping accordingly.
The Admiral Nimitz National Museum of the Pacific War is right on Main Street. It honors Admiral Chester Nimitz, who was born in Fredericksburg, and tells the story of the war in the Pacific during World War II.
Also on Main Street are the Fredericksburg Butterfly Ranch and the Pioneer Museum Complex. The Butterfly Ranch is a great family destination. Its 1,500-square-foot building houses native Texas plants and thousands of butterflies.
Lady Bird Johnson Park is a city park that includes a golf course, wilderness trail, a small lake with canoes and pedal boats available for use, plus great spots for picnics and other activities.
Another big draw in the area is Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, whose centerpiece is a solid block of granite that is 500 feet high and covers 640 acres. Climbers can follow trails to the top of the dome (the trails are steep but children and older visitors alike make the trek regularly; just think twice if you have health problems), where the Hill Country views are spectacular. This is one of the most popular state parks in Texas; if going on holidays or summer weekends, call ahead to make sure visitors are still allowed in (there is a quota at popular times of year). Also, if planning a climb to the top during the summer months, keep in mind that the granite dome gets extremely hot as the day progresses. Enchanted Rock is about 20 miles north of Fredericksburg.
Also worth a visit is the Old Tunnel Wildlife Management Area, south of Fredericksburg. It's an abandoned railroad tunnel that has been claimed by bats. From June through October, visitors can watch around 2 million bats fly out of the tunnel every evening at dusk.
