Dallas-Fort Worth Golf
The Dallas-Forth Worth area is huge and, as you'd expect, offers many, many choices for public golf. Some of the best municipal golf courses in Texas are in the DFW area, and the Metroplex continues to welcome many new daily fee and upscale public courses every year.
(Note: Green fees are rated as $, $$ or $$$; $ denotes a course in the least expensive third of courses in the area; $$ in the middle and $$$ in the most expensive third. Actual rates may vary seasonally or from year to year, so always make sure you know the actual rates before going to a course.)
1. Cowboys Golf Club ($$$)
The Dallas Cowboys football team is co-owner of this fantastic facility, and you'll see plenty of Cowboys memorabilia around the clubhouse and course. You might even see some Cowboys players. A beauty with lots of trees, water and natural habitat. North of DFW Airport in Grapevine.

2. TPC Course at Four Seasons Resort and Club at Las Colinas ($$$)
The TPC Course is part of the Four Seasons Resort and Club in Irving, and home to the PGA Tour Byron Nelson Classic. It's a course built for the pros - and is kept in great shape yearround - but it's fun for the rest of us, too.

3. Buffalo Creek Golf Club ($$)
Very highly regarded by all who play it, Buffalo Creek offers natural beauty and challenging golf holes. Fine bentgrass greens on a course routed through trees and water features. East of Downtown Dallas in Rockwall.

4. The Golf Club at Castle Hills ($$)
Rolling terrain and trees help set off this great course. It puts a premium on precision off the tee. The back tees will be challenging for the best golfers but forward tees more accommodating. NE of Dallas in Lewisville.

5. The Golf Club at Fossil Creek ($$)
This Arnold Palmer design has been wowing Metroplex golfers since 1987. There is water on 15 of 18 holes, much of it streams the run to and from Fossil Creek. Cliffs and lakes, bluffs and trees. North side of Fort Worth.

6. The Tribute Golf Club ($$$)
This is a tribute course, ala the Tour 18 courses and Bear's Best, in which famous holes from different courses are recreated. What's recreated here is the best of Scotland, and it does a great job of recreating such well-known holes as the Road Hole and the Postage Stamp. North of Dallas in The Colony.

7. Bear Creek Golf Club - West Course ($$)
Bear Creek Golf Club has 36 holes built within the confines of Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. Some people find the close flyovers annoying. They are noisy, but we think it's a pretty cool - and unusual - golf environment. The West Course features tall trees and some tight fairways on the front, and opens up a little on the back.

8. Texas Star Golf Course ($)
One of the best municipal courses in Texas, Texas Star rolls around Hurricane Creek with wide fairways surrounded by native grasses, and nicely sculpted water features. In Euless, northeast of Fort Worth and northwest of Dallas.

Tour 18 Dallas - which is actually in Flower Mound - is a tribute course that replicates 18 of America's greatest golf holes. Included is Amen Corner, from Augusta.
