Beaumont

Beaumont, Texas
Beaumont is one of the largest and fastest-growing of Texas' mid-sized cities, with a population around 120,000 in the most recent census.

The city exploded into existance in 1901 when the Spindletop oil gusher blew its top. Within weeks, Beaumont was a city of more than 30,000 as oil prospectors and wildcatters poured into town.

Lamar University is based in Beaumont, and one of the biggest events in southeast Texas, the South Texas State Fair, takes place every October.

For a city of its size, Beaumont boasts and cornucopia of museums - the Art Museum of Southeast Texas; Beaumont Police Museum; Clifton Steamboat Museum; Texas Energy Museum; Babe Didrikson Zaharias Museum; and Fire Museum of Texas, to name a few.

Several more art galleries, the Crockett Street Entertainment District, and a re-creation of the Spindletop Boomtown are popular with visitors, too.

There is plenty to do all around Beaumont. Houston is nearby, and the casinos of Lake Charles, La., are even closer. Then there are the beaches of the Texas Gulf Coast, convenient to the southeast of town.

Getting to Beaumont

Beaumont sits in deep East Texas, east of Houston on Interstate 10 and west of Lake Charles, La., via Interstate 10. It's roughly 80 miles from Houston to Beaumont, then another 60 miles from Beaumont to Lake Charles. U.S. Highway 96 southeast out of Beaumont takes the driver to Port Arthur and the Texas Gulf Coast.

For travelers who prefer flying to driving, Beaumont is served by the Southeast Texas Regional Airport in nearby Nederland. The SETRA serves a wide swath of southeast Texas and southwest Louisiana, including Beaumont, Nederland and Port Arthur. Continental Express, connecting through Houston, is the main carrier at SETRA.

SETRA is located about 90 miles from Houston's two airport, George Bush Intercontinental and Hobby. Those much larger airports are another option for fliers heading to Beaumont.
