About Abilene State Park:
Abilene State Park is a 530-acre facility about 20 minutes outside of Abilene, along Elm Creek. The parkland sits among a low range of hills called the Callahan Divide. The land was acquired by the State of Texas from the City of Abilene, and original construction performed by the Civilian Conservation Corps, in the 1930s.
What is there to do at Abilene State Park? Plenty: camping, hiking, nature study, picknicking, swimming in the warmer months, biking, walking and fishing, to name a few.
Facilities include developed campsites with water nearby and tables and grills, plus group trailer areas with hookups. A swimming pool and wading pool are open during the summer.
As for flora and fauna, we'll quote the TPWD website: "Abilene is in a semi-arid region of short prairie grass, brushland, and wooded stream valleys of mesquite, juniper, cedar, native pecan, elm, live oaks, hackberry, Texas red oak, red bud, and various other plants, and wildflowers.
"Wildlife observation and photography include white-tailed deer, raccoon, armadillo, fox, squirrel, cottontail rabbit, and a large variety of birds including Mississippi kite, roadrunner, cardinal, hummingbird, mockingbird, and many others. Popular fish include bass, crappie, catfish, and perch."
Also in the park are buffalo and part of the official state Texas Longhorn herd.
Abilene State Park is open daily throughout the year, with the busy season being March through September. There is a small entry fee, with higher fees for overnight camping.
